May is Mental Health Awareness Month and VSA is reaching out to those in need
May 22, 2018. . . VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – As part of Mental Health Awareness month, VSA Resorts president, Lori Overholt is partnering with PIN Ministry to help those in need.
Overholt is not only dedicated to providing dream vacations through VSA’s three Virginia Beach resorts, but also spends her time helping PIN Ministry to provide food, clothing, shelter and medical care for people who are either homeless or extremely poor.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an estimated 26 percent of homeless adults staying in shelters live with serious mental illness, and an estimated 46 percent live with severe mental illness or substance abuse issues.
“Millions of Americans are affected by mental health conditions every year,” Overholt said. “That’s why it’s up to each of us to do our part to help those in need.”
Overholt is taking the topics of homelessness and mental health awareness to heart and has made it her mission to combat the issues facing the homeless in Virginia Beach. She serves on the board at PIN Ministry. She’s particularly supportive of PIN’s Change Makers Job Training program and has recently hired a graduate of the program to join the team at VSA.
VSA employees are encouraged to come together once a month and make sandwiches to give to local shelters or volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Under Overholt’s leadership, VSA has held clothing drives and collected personal care items to donate. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Employees at the VSA resorts love to pitch in.
“If there is anything we can do to help at least one person, then we should try,” Overholt said. “Everyone deserves a chance.”
Overholt received her degree from UVA and has been president of VSA since 2008. She is a long-time Virginia Beach resident, graduating from Green Run High School. She is graduate of Lead Hampton Roads, a 10-month Leadership Training Program focusing on issues impacting the Hampton Roads region. She is also the Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Beach Travel and Tourism Foundation.
